South Korean Nationals Arrested for Running Illegal Online Casinos in Thailand
Thailand has taken action against two South Korean nationals who have been accused of operating illegal online casinos in the country. This move comes amidst growing concerns over the presence of illegal online gambling sites, which are prohibited in Thailand and have raised alarms among Chinese authorities.
Crackdown on Cross-Border Gambling
Chinese officials recently urged Thailand to crack down on cross-border gambling activities involving illegal gambling sites. As a result, two South Koreans were apprehended for their alleged involvement in running an online casino operation from a house in Udon Thani province. Thai authorities fear that the legalization of gambling could attract more criminal elements to the country.
A joint team of immigration and local police officers conducted a raid on the location and successfully apprehended the suspects. Pol Lt Gen Panumart Boonyalak, the head of the immigration bureau, led the operation against the foreign nationals.
Details of the Illegal Operation
Upon searching the premises, law enforcement officers discovered that the two South Koreans were operating the online casino using dedicated server systems. The suspects were taken into custody for questioning, and local media outlets have reported on the case. Investigators identified two websites, Vinus Gaming Services and 100d-1, as the platforms used by the South Koreans to facilitate their gambling activities.
The brands have a significant global user base, with the suspects admitting to maintaining the illegal gambling websites, assisting gamblers with transactions, and promoting the sites in South Korea and other countries. While the exact revenue generated by the websites remains unclear, the operation is believed to have yielded a monthly turnover of $2.80 million (4 billion South Korean won).
The suspects revealed that they received monthly salaries ranging from $2,300 to $2,900 each for their roles in maintaining the websites and advertising them in targeted countries, including South Korea and Thailand.
Intensified Efforts Against Illegal Gambling
Chinese authorities have been urging their Thai counterparts to escalate efforts in combatting illegal gambling activities. Recently, a Chinese national was sentenced to six years in prison for operating an extensive illegal gambling operation that catered to mainland Chinese gamblers in remote areas of Macau.
In another incident, mainland Chinese actor Wang Xing was kidnapped by criminals in Thailand and forced to participate in illegal gambling and telecommunications scam operations.
