New Jersey Legislators Push for Miss America Pageant Return to Atlantic City
New Jersey lawmakers are rallying to bring back the iconic Miss America Pageant to its roots in Atlantic City, emphasizing the deep historical ties between the prestigious event and the seaside city. Despite the pageant’s recent relocations, most notably to Orlando, Florida, legislators are determined to see it return to where it all began in 1921.
The Bill and Its Historical Significance
The resolution, introduced on October 21, 2024, is set for review on Thursday, highlighting the longstanding relationship between Miss America and Atlantic City. Copies of the resolution will be sent to the CEO of the Miss America Organization and the reigning Miss America, Abbie Stockard of Alabama, crowned on January 5 this year.
The resolution states, “The long and storied history of the Miss America Pageant has been inextricably tied to its origins and long-standing relationship with Atlantic City.”
A Boost for Tourism and Summer Season
Lawmakers anticipate that the pageant’s return will not only boost tourism but also extend the summer season and revive an iconic piece of Americana. Miss America’s origins trace back to the Inter-City Beauty Contest, debuting in Atlantic City almost a century ago before evolving into a national competition attracting contestants from across the US.
In 1937, Bette Cooper, a 17-year-old from Hackettstown, New Jersey, was crowned Miss America, further cementing the event’s ties to the local community.
Empowerment and Scholarship Program
Aside from its glitz and glamour, Miss America stands as a beacon of empowerment and philanthropy. Since 1945, the organization has awarded over $150 million in scholarships, making it the largest scholarship program for women globally. Moreover, the pageant has taken on socially conscious roles by enabling contestants to champion causes and raise awareness on important issues.

A Return to Atlantic City
Despite recent relocations, the proposed resolution aims to see the pageant return to Atlantic City in 2025 and hopes it will stay there in the coming years. Lawmakers argue that a return to its birthplace would honor its history and breathe new life into the city’s cultural and economic landscape.
As New Jersey’s 221st Legislature considers the issue, efforts are being made to convince the Miss America Organization to reinstate Atlantic City as the annual host of this enduring tradition.
Last May, Glenn Straub, former owner of an Atlantic City casino, filed a lawsuit challenging the ownership of Miss America, claiming intellectual property rights after his company acquired the Miss America Organization in December 2022.
